Hot Off The Grill: November 8 and 11

Like a freshly cooked cheesesteak, each week sees the release of a new batch of games that we can sink our teeth into. Some weeks taste better than others, but the fun lies in the discovery. Don’t know for sure if you like something until you try it, right?

First off, yes, I know i missed a week. Reviewing two games for GamerNode and playing a highly-anticipated game featuring some guy named Drake will do that to you.

Secondly, do I even need to tell you what comes out this week? Only the biggest, most advertised launch of the friggin’ year in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

As for the sorry saps that launch with it, we have the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (which despite its launch day SHOULD NOT BE MISSED), Happy Feet Two, and The Black Eyed Peas Experience. Heh, not exactly a strong group of contenders, AMIRITE?!

HOWEVER, let’s not overlook Friday the 11th, when the GLORIOUS Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim descends from heaven to shower up with gaming goodness. Happy 7th anniversary baby and good luck to my sister in her starring role in Footloose at my alma mater. If you need me, I’ll be in Skyrim.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The blogger will NOT actually be passing up those two events for Skyrim. Lay down your arms, people!)

The battle has begun.

This week sees the release of Battlefield 3, the strikingly beautiful modern shooter designed to be a Call of Duty killer. Will it live up to the lofty expectations and deliver an experience better than Infinity Ward’s colossus? We have two more weeks to speculate, so hopefully EA can capitalize on the head start.

For the non-shooter crowd, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land will take played back to the glory days of platforminf, Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi will inject some ki energy into your system, and the downloadable markets get a classic in DAYYTOOOONAAAAAAAAA USA. Here’s the full lineup:

Xbox 360:
Battlefield 3
The Cursed Crusade
Daytona USA
Disney Universe
Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi
Just Dance Kids 2
Kinect Sports Season Two
Puss in Boots
War of the Worlds
Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone

PlayStation 3:
Back to the Future: The Game
Battlefield 3
The Cursed Crusade
Daytona USA
Disney Universe
Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi
Grease Dance
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan – The Chosen Few
House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut
Infamous: Festival of Blood
Just Dance Kids 2
Monster Bass!
PixelJunk SideScroller
Puss in Boots
Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone

Wii:
Active Life: Magical Carnival
Back to the Future: The Game
Centipede: Infestation
Country Dance 2
Disney Universe
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan – The Chosen Few
Just Dance Kids 2
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land
Monster High School: Ghoul Spirit
Puss in Boots

3DS:
Ben 10 Galatctic Racing
Captain America: Super Soldier
Centipede: Infestation
Heavy Fire: Chosen Few
Horses 3D
Nikili’s Pencil Puzzle 3D
Pokemon Rumble Blast
Zoo Resort

DS:
Monster High School: Ghoul Spirit
Puss in Boots

PSP:
Invizimals: Shadow Zone

This week is all Battlefield for me, though DBZ intrigues me a bit (though all of those games have), and I may have to go back to the days of the MacDade Mall arcade with Daytona.

What are you all getting?

October 18th, or as some have been calling it, the dawn of Walletmaggedon. The big holiday release season starts today with the return of the Dark Knight in Batman: Arkham City. Arkham Asylum did wonders for what previously was an abysmal library of Batman video games, and one can only hope that Arkham City will keep the trend going (based on early reviews, it seems to be doing just that).

For the non-Batman crowd, a new Ratchet and Clank springs into action on the PS3, Professor Layton returns for more puzzle-solving, and yet another music franchise tries to revitalize the ailing genre. Here’s the full list:

Xbox 360:
Batman: Arkham City
Ben 10: Galactic Racing
Rocksmith
The Sims 3: Pets
Tropico 4

PlayStation 3:
Batman: Arkham City
Ben 10: Galactic Racing
Rocksmith
The Sims 3: Pets

Wii:
Ben 10: Galactic Racing

Nintendo DS:
Ben 10: Galactic Racing
Professor Layton and the Last Specter

I expect a lot of you to be going into Dark Knight mode, but I personally am looking forward to solving some more puzzles with Layton and Luke.

NEXT WEEK: Time to step on the field of battle for the third time.

As we approach the holiday season, the biggest games of the year start to see daylight. While this is the last week without a true AAA title until Thanksgiving (I’m serious, look it up), when all is said and done October 11th could very well be the Sleeper Week of 2011. There are some quality releases hitting shelves, so long as you know what to look for. By system:

Xbox 360:
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record
Forza Motorsport 4
Hulk Hogan’s Main Event (Kinect)
Michael Phelps: Push The Limit (Kinect)
Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition
WipeOut: The Game 2

PlayStation 3:
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record
Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition
WipeOut: The Game 2

Nintendo Wii:
Go Vacation
WipeOut: The Game 2

Nintendo 3DS:
The Hidden
WipeOut: The Game 2

Nintendo DS:
Aliens: Infestation
WipeOut: The Game 2

Personally, Dead Rising is at the top of my list, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on Ace Combat and Aliens: Infestation. Ace Combat was mighty impressive at E3 this past year, and Aliens is essentially Symphony of the Night or Metroid but with H.R. Giger’s famous monstrosities.

Sleeper Week 2011. Calling it now.
